Zlatan Ibrahimovic is kicking his teammates again

It's been a minute since Zlatan Ibrahimovic last attacked one of his teammates at AC Milan. First, there was the time he kicked Rodney Strasser in the back for absolutely no reason whatsoever. Then, he tried to kick the ball out of Robinho's shirt during a goal celebration. Then, there was the infamous training ground fight between him and Oguchi Onyewu.

Maybe he grew bored of picking on his club teammates, so as Sweden prepare for their Euro qualifier against Moldova on Tuesday, he decided to turn his training ground assaults on his international brethren.

While talking with Christian Wilhelmsson during a training session, Zlatan casually took a seat. Seconds later, something snapped and Zlatan jumped up to deliver a stinging kick to Wilhelmsson's backside. Clearly surprised by this, Wilhelmsson charged back at Ibra, but stopped short of getting retribution and merely nudged Zlatan's thigh with his boot.

So what the funk is wrong with Ibra? Who knows. But it might be time he starts attending training sessions in a Hannibal Lecter cage.

Your handy guide to the 2011 open-wheel season

Both major open-wheel series kick off Sunday when the Izod IndyCar Series races at St. Petersburg and Formula 1 races at Melbourne, Australia.

The Melbourne race was supposed to be the second F1 race of the season, but protests in Bahrain made the decision to postpone (and possibly cancel) the original season opener that was scheduled for March 13 a no-brainer.

St. Pete marks the return of Danica Patrick to the IndyCar Series and it could also be her final trip to the Florida city on the Gulf of Mexico if she makes the transition to NASCAR in 2012.

Other things to watch in 2011:

-- Narain Karthikeyan moved to Formula 1 from the Camping World Truck Series and that seems like quite a leap, doesn't it? The Fastest Indian in the World's Hispania team didn't do any preseason testing and it showed Saturday in qualifying where Karthikeyan was the slowest of the 24 cars that made qualifying attempts. In fact, he was so slow that he missed the race.

-- Karthikeyan missed the race because F1 reintroduced the 107% rule, which states that the entire field must be within 107% of the pole-winning speed in order to be able to race. Of course, with it being F1, it ultimately comes down to the final discretion of officials (and you thought NASCAR played favorites) but Karthikeyan was over 11 seconds slower than defending world champion Sebastian Vettel. Hispania's exemption request of "exceptional circumstances" to allow Karthikeyan and teammate Vitantonio Liuzzi to race was denied.

-- Graham Rahal has a full-time ride in the IndyCar Series thanks to a pairing between legendary drag racer Don "The Snake" Prudhomme and Chip Ganassi. The Ganassi satellite team for Rahal and teammate Charlie Kimball is housed in Prudhomme's shop. Rahal won the St. Petersburg race in 2008.

-- Will a non-Ganassi or non-Penske car win a race this year in IndyCar? Only two cars not from either stable won a race in 2010, and those were the Andretti Autosport cars of Ryan Hunter-Reay and Tony Kanaan. At one point, AA was on the same level with Penske and Target Chip Ganassi. Now they're a clear-cut No. 3. To say that the series needs Andretti Autosport or another team to be a serious contender is a massive understatement.

-- Speaking of Kanaan, he's with KV Racing after parting ways with Andretti Autosport rather unceremoniously. Marco Andretti was rather blunt in talking about Kanaan, and Kanaan's relationship with Patrick wasn't warm and fuzzy either. The 2004 IndyCar champion originally got a ride with de Ferran Dragon Racing for 2011 but didn't have enough funding for the full season and was able to score a late deal with KV.

-- Dan Wheldon, the 2005 champion and Paul Tracy don't have full-time rides. Tracy has funding for the Canadian races and the Indianapolis 500 with Dreyer and Reinbold Racing and Wheldon announced a deal with Bryan Herta to run the 500.

-- Will anyone dethrone Red Bull Renault in F1? Vettel was three-quarters of a second faster than Lewis Hamilton in Saturday's qualifying. If Vettel is dethroned by someone who isn't Mark Webber, his teammate, it will come from series stalwarts McLaren Mercedes (Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button) and Ferrari (Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa).

-- Farewell, current IndyCar chassis. The series goes to their version of the COT next year, which should mean that there are a plethora of good chassis available for drivers to take the $5 million challenge in the season's final race at Las Vegas. But will scheduling allow anyone competitive to take it?

UFN 24 picks, Vegas-style: Hardy an underdog against Johnson

Dan Hardy and Anthony Johnson meet up tonight on the comeback trail. Hardy is trying to get a win after a knockout loss at the hands of Carlos Condit, while Johnson returns from injuries after 16 months off. Hardy is staring at three straight losses, yet he's an underdog. Hardy at plus-125 is on our best best plays on the card.

Yahoo!'s lead MMA writer Kevin Iole joins us to break down Ultimate Fight Night 24 (Spike 10 p.m. ET/PT) and gives his Vegas odds winners.

Even though this is only his ninth fight since turning pro in 2008, Phil Davis is a huge 3-to-1 favorite over veteran Antonio Rogerio Nogueira. There's value on "Lil' Nog" at plus-220, but only if can stay off the mat against Davis, a former Penn State wrestler.

Leonard Garcia is a favorite over "The Korean Zombie" Chan Sung Jung. Garcia has decision wins over Zombie and Nam Phan, but many observers thought he lost both. Amir Sadollah (4-2, 4-2 UFC) is a massive favorite at minus-300, that in spite of the fact that he's had trouble finishing fights. DaMarques Johnson (12-8, 3-2 UFC) has broken mentally a few times in the past, but he's a pretty dangerous fighter on the ground and brimming with confidence right now.

Michael McDonald and John Hathaway, two of Zuffa's better prospects, are on the Facebook undercard. McDonald, 20, is a big favorite over Edwin Figueroa while Hathaway, 23, who has a limited wrestling experience, faces a good grappler in Kris McCray. This is the second fight at welterweight for the plus-250 McCray.

Keep an eye on Mike Russow against Jon Madsen. The "The Ultimate Fighter 10" alum Madsen has quietly gone 4-0 in the UFC but relies heavily on his takedown game. Russow is a stocky dude with good power in hands. He offers nice value at plus-240. Another TUF alum with a question mark could be Alex "Bruce Leroy" Cacares. He faces an experienced veteran with a lot of motivation in Mackens Semerzier. Semerzier's back is against the wall with three straight losses.

Official plays in bold below.

UFN 24 betting odds (Courtesy Lagasse's Stadium Las Vegas):

Antonio Rogerio Nogueira (+220) vs . Phil Davis (-300) - Light heavyweight

Dan Hardy (+120) vs. Anthony Johnson (-150) - Welterweight

DeMarques Johnson (+220) vs. Amir Sadollah (-300) - Welterweight

Chan Sung Jung (-105) vs. Leonard Garcia (-125) - Featherweight

Alex Caceres (+170) vs. Mackens Semerzier (-200) - Featherweight

Mike Russow (+240) vs. Jon Madsen (-320) - Heavyweight

Kris McCray (+250) vs. John Hathaway (-330) - Welterweight

Edwin Figueroa (+220) vs. Michael McDonald (-300) - Bantamweight

Sean McCorkle (+135) vs. Christian Morecraft (-165) - Heavyweight

Mario Miranda (+180) vs. Aaron Simpson (-220) - Middleweight

T.J. Waldburger (+300) vs. Johny Hendricks (-400) - Welteweight

Waylon Lowe (+180) vs. Nik Lentz (-220) - Lightweight

Johnson flips the script on Hardy, taking him down at will for UFN 24 win

Anthony Johnson and Dan Hardy have excellent knockout power, so the fans were expecting an all-out firefight. In fact during the prefight teleconference, Johnson promised there'd be no takedowns. He lied, and for good reason.

Instead, Johnson decided to prey on Hardy's biggest weakness. Johnson scored takedowns and maintained top control in every round to cruise to a unanimous decision victory, 30-27 on all three cards, in the co-main event at Ultimate Fight Night 24 in Seattle.

All five of Johnson's previous UFC wins had come via KO or TKO. Hardy's takedown defense was shown to be very weak against Georges St. Pierre at UFC 111, so Johnson turned to his JUCO wrestling pedigree. The crowd at Key Arena booed loudly at different times, but there was no reason to risk anything on the feet. Johnson outlanded Hardy 72-5 over the course of the 15 minutes.

Johnson's best moments came in the first, when he floored Hardy with a head kick, and the third when he took Hardy's back. He went from attemtping choke to locking an arm-triangle choke and even worked a neck crank in the final seconds. When he rose to his feet, as the crowd howled, Johnson blew some kisses.

Hardy's lost three straight fights. This was a big one for Johnson, who'd missed the last 16 months battling injuries and recovering from knee surgery. While sidelined Johnson (9-3, 6-3 UFC) blew up to 220-plus pounds. He normally cuts a lot of weight and has suffered stamina issues in some past fights. Tonight, he looked fresh for all 15 minutes. He said during the postfight press conference that walked into the cage in this 170 pound fight somewhere between 190-195 pounds.

Twitter, Facebook, Groupon, and Social Media – What Online Advertisers Need to Know

Posted By Jaime on Apr 12th, 2011

This article by Hollis Thomases originally appeared in ClickZ on April 5, 2011.

Did I get your attention? Of course I did…and that’s my point. Today, social media topics attract advertisers’ attention like bright shiny objects to a fault. By my own observations, because they do capture so much attention, almost any headline containing the words Twitter, Facebook, Groupon, or social media gets clicked, shared, forwarded, and tweeted five times more than other digital advertising or marketing-related headlines, oftentimes without the article even ever being read. In fact, I confess to writing this headline as an experiment, just to prove my point.

smheadlines

Is this all so bad? Isn’t social media a way for brands to connect individually with their consumers in ways they never have before? Heck, didn’t I write a book on the subject?!

Are You Focused On Your Goals?

My concern lies in the ability for advertisers to focus on the kinds of online tactics that will help them reach their goals. When advertisers (and key decision-makers, quite frankly) get too distracted from proven tactics or develop unrealistic or untenable perceptions, it does them no lasting good. For example, last week at the Search Engine Strategies New York Conference, I spoke about expanding beyond pay-per-click search advertising and into display advertising. The room was about half full. The timeslot before this session, I spoke on another panel about Twitter, and the room was almost completely full. Yet, while many companies have successfully leveraged search and display to generate direct and measurable revenue, those doing so through Twitter are fewer and farther between.

Furthermore, I found it interesting that of those audience members in my “Leap from Search to Display” session, by a show of hands, only about half had even ventured outside of Google AdWords and into the Google Display Network, let alone into other forms of online media buying. I had to ask myself how many of these people, however, were also busying themselves setting up and populating Facebook pages or Twitter accounts before they ever even leveraged their search advertising successes? And when I asked the audience how many knew of ways to serve online ads besides through the direct serving of traditional banners and buttons, scarcely a half-dozen hands went up (by my count, there are at least 13 other types of ads or ways for these ads to be served).

While I’ll be the last person to dispute that social media and its respective platforms have merit, I find myself constantly reminding marketers that social media is just another tool in the toolkit. You should take out this tool if it’s the best tool to help you build or fix something, but if a wrench can do a better/faster/less expensive job, why use a hammer? And if you’re going to venture into the sun-shiny terrain of social media marketing, don’t go in with blinders on.

Reality Check

I’m a two-sides-to-every-story kind of girl, so I don’t want to paint a completely bleak picture. I formulate my opinions and recommendations by doing a lot of reading, listening, and observation (my parents are happy I’m putting my anthropology-sociology-social psychology college degree to good use). For example:

I recently overheard an advertiser saying that Facebook Ads worked better than PPC for them to reach their more affluent audience. This made sense to me, and Merry Morud wrote a great article on this for ClickZ’s sister site, Search Engine Watch.A Harris Interactive-RightNow post-holiday 2010 report found social media could create brand advocates – two-thirds of the 85 percent of customers who posted a negative review of a shopping experience and were then contacted by the retailer wound up taking a positive action through social media that directly negated their original negative posting.retailers-sm-harris-rightnow-mar11B2B advertisers, according to new research from Forrester, might not believe in online display advertising’s effectiveness, but I say they might find great success in LinkedIn Ads. (Forrester’s research also points out that B2B advertisers cannot merely port over their true blue print media practices and expect them to work.)While manufacturing companies sometimes flounder to figure out how to leverage Facebook and Twitter, they forget that video demonstrations of their products are a YouTube must-do.Though many local businesses have found success with Groupon and their imitators, others claim to lose money (Rice University Graduate School of Management study) or customer loyalty (New York Times Blog). Know what to expect before you dive in.

So you can see that social media definitely has its place in the overall marketing strategy. I just encourage advertisers not to fall prey to all the hype and dig a little deeper to understand the facts and what’s appropriate for their particular business, industry, and short- and long-term goals.

Stewart, on early hot streak, back for more in Cali

Tony Stewart's probably having a decent week. Smoke, of course, is off to one of his best career starts to a season and returning to the site of his last victory.

He also dabbled in working as a zookeeper this week at the Oakland Zoo, where he got face-to-face with an 11,000-pound elephant. (Stewart is no newbie to the animal kingdom — he once owned a patas monkey that he later donated to the Louisville Zoo.)

But zoo stories aside, Stewart's got a race this weekend at Auto Club Speedway and 42 other helmeted elephants to deal with — and his preview of it doesn't gloss much over.

"I've just been terrible there," the two-time Sprint Cup champion said. "We've had times when we've been good, but I've really struggled as a driver there over the course of 12 years."

Stewart's relationship with the southern California track has been so personally murky that even a win there last October didn't seem to sway his opinion. In terms of average finish, Stewart has just three tracks on the Sprint Cup Series circuit where he typically is worse at — Bristol, Daytona and Talladega.

The victory was Stewart's first in 18 tries at the track, and it was the culmination of a decided improvement for Stewart at the two-mile oval. In the past six seasons, Stewart has been the sixth-best Cup driver under the near-Hollywood lights.

Such improvement has been also evident in his first four cracks at the 2011 season. Stewart is third in points, just 12 markers back of leader Kurt Busch, thanks to an average finish of 10th and 222 laps led.

For perspective, Stewart has long been known to improve as the season wears on and the summer sun starts to turn the paved race tracks a little more like the Turns 1 and 2 at his self-owned dirt track, Eldora Speedway. The numbers don't hide it: Stewart's 222 laps led so far this season far outpace his last two.

In 2009, Stewart needed 18 races to lead that many laps and in 2010 it took 25 races of the 36-race schedule. Stewart's finishing position is also two spots better through the season's first four races than a year ago.

"This year, with the new nose, we took another step toward that and spent a lot of time in the wind tunnel," Stewart's crew chief Darian Grubb said. "I feel like we had a pretty good baseline going into this year. We've had three chances to win on a speedway, a one-mile and a mile-and-a-half, so we feel pretty good about our program right now."

Does that guarantee Stewart will be California dreamin' come Sunday? Certainly not. But it does strike a pretty ominous chord for drivers used to dealing with Smoke mostly when the mercury begins to rise.

'Sucker Punch': Girl Power On Steroids

Sucker Punch is an action-packed film opening this weekend that features plenty of girl power, including Emily Browning, Abbie Cornish, Jena Malone and Vanessa Hudgens.

Directed by Zach Snyder , Sucker Punch looks like a mix of Girl, Interrupted meets Lara Croft meets Charlie's Angels.

Sucker Punch stars Emily Browning who plays Baby Doll, a girl who is taken to the mental asylum by her mean stepfather. Faced with the knowledge that she will undergo a lobotomy in a week, she and four other inmates, played by Abbie Cornish, Jena Malone, Vanessa Hudgens and Jamie Chung, retreat to a fantasy world in her imagination where they plan their escape.

Sucker Punch

It is hard to determine what is real and what is fantasy as they fight their way through this fantasy world, trying to escape from the prison.

"I’m a big fan of Heavy Metal and fantasy art, so in terms of the setting and the way the world is built, that definitely comes in there," Snyder explained. "And I love the sort of Twilight Zone type of storytelling, so that also fuels the vibe to the movie."

The reviews of the movie have been mixed, ranging from USA Today's review saying, "The action sequences, scored by a blistering techno soundtrack, are top-notch and prevalent," to Cinema Blend’s scathing review, "The story’s so completely lifeless, the characters so hollow, the connection so non-existent, that you can’t even really sit back and enjoy the visuals."

Sucker Punch opens March 25.

‘Korean Zombie’ uses twister submission to beat Garcia at UFN 24

It wasn't the slugfest the first fight produced, but Chan Sung Jung more than made up for the lack of big strikes by beating Leonard Garcia with a unique submission. "The Korean Zombie" showed he can fight smart as well by landing a twister to finish Garcia with just one second left in the second round in the first televised bout at Ultimate Fight Night 24 on Spike.

"I've been watching Eddie Bravo videos on YouTube for a long time," Jung said through a translator. "I kept saying during practice at Korean Top Team that I'm going to do the twister in the UFC some day. Hopefully, I'll get the Submission of the Night."

Jung (11-3, 1-0 UFC) had Garcia's back late in the second when he decided to focus on one leg. He also got a hold of Garcia's head and cranked it back. The twister puts tremendous pressure on the spine. Garcia couldn't hold out, tapped and the fight was stopped by referee Dan Miragliotta at 4:59 of the second.

Garcia (15-7, 2-3 UFC) was headed down the wrong path from the opening seconds. He's built his reputation in the UFC and WEC by going for the broke. His striking is often reckless, but he does damage and scores with judges. He won the first throwdown with the Zombie at WEC 48, in a fight many thought Jung took by decision. Garcia repeated the feat his last time out against Nam Phan.

Garcia chose to go with a more controlled style and looked to counterstrike. He never got Jung's timing down. Garcia was the victim of a takedown in the first and ate some big shots on the ground.

In the second, he landed virtually nothing and went down again when the fighters connected on kicks at the same time. Jung jumped into top control with 1:11 left in the round. Jung softened him up with some big elbows. He threw Garcia's legs to the side and took his back with 33 seconds left.

Before this fight, Jung worked with Urijah Faber's camp, Team Alpha Male. He fought with a nice gameplan, beating Garcia in eveyr phase of the game.

VCU deserves to celebrate after victory over Florida State

If you haven't had the privilege of seeing a VCU's postgame celebration, it's something worth watching.

After Friday 72-71 overtime victory against Florida State, VCU coach Shaka Smart went into the locker room, said few words and then yielded the floor freshman forward Heath Houston for the traditional postgame dance.

Houston started off by doing the Seminoles Tomahawk Chop with his left arm then pretended to cut off the arm with his right end. Then he transitioned into what could best be described as a series of MMA moves culminating in Houston and his teammates stomping their opponent on the floor of their locker room.

Remember, this is the same VCU team that was giving Florida State players high fives and daps as they passed the Seminoles in the arena hallway after defeating Purdue to get to the Sweet 16. Florida State was preparing for its game against Notre Dame.

But on this night VCU deserved to celebrate because the Rams survived a game that they should have lost twice. Had it not been for poor clock management by Florida State and the Seminoles inability to consistently make shots, the Rams could have been blown out of San Antonio.

VCU actually blew a nine-point lead and scored just three points in the final 7 minutes and 37 seconds of regulation.

But VCU came up big with it needed it the most. With 7.9 second remaining in overtime, guard Joey Rodriguez inbounded the ball to Bradford Burgess, who made a layup with 7.1 seconds remaining. It would ultimately be the game winner and send the Rams to the school's first Elite Eight appearance.

The lowest remaining seed in the tournament will now advance to play Kansas, the highest remaining seed, on Sunday.

VCU becomes the first team to win four games to reach the Elite Eight -- this is the first year with multiple play-in games -- and is just the fifth 11-seed to make it to the Elite Eight.

So go on and dance VCU. You've earned it.

Lidge the latest on a lengthy list of closers to go down this spring

Brad Lidge(notes) returned to the mound for the Philadelphia Phillies on Thursday after missing the past two weeks with biceps tendinitis.

But after striking out the first two batters he faced, Lidge struggled in 2/3 of an inning, allowing two hits and two walks. Following the game, Lidge said he was feeling shoulder pain -- something he'd never encountered before -- that got worse as he threw more pitches.

From MLB.com:

"There was always a little pain in the back [of the shoulder], which we thought was from the biceps tendinitis," Lidge said. "I'm not really familiar with the shoulder. I haven't had shoulder issues before, at least not for a long time. So I'm not really familiar with the discomfort and pain I'm having."

Lidge will undergo a MRI exam next week in Philadelphia. In the meantime, he'll begin the season on the disabled list.

With that, Lidge joins a growing list of closers who will be sidelined when the 2011 season begins next week. Also among the injured:

Frank Francisco(notes): The Toronto Blue Jays closer will also begin the season on the DL, due to tightness in his right pectoral muscle and inflammation in his biceps. Francisco visited Dr. James Andrews for an examination, but no structural damage was found.

Brian Wilson(notes): The San Francisco Giants' postseason sensation may avoid the DL, but doesn't look like he'll be ready to close for the world champs on opening day. Wilson has a strained oblique and had to cut a throwing session short on Wednesday.

Andrew Bailey(notes): Bailey also paid a visit Dr. Andrews after leaving a game 10 days ago with tightness in his elbow. But exams turned up no structural damage, and it's believed that the "ripping sensation" Bailey felt was scar tissue in the elbow breaking up. Being ready for opening day is unlikely.

J.J. Putz(notes): Putz was shut down last week after feeling stiffness in his back during a throwing session. But after throwing long toss on Wednesday, the Arizona Diamondbacks are hopeful he'll be ready to start the season.

John Axford(notes): The Milwaukee Brewers' new closer missed the first couple weeks of spring training due to food poisoning and resulting weight loss. He hasn't pitched very well since returning (compiling an 8.44 ERA), but the Brewers say he'll be their closer. One scout wonders if Axford's delivery is too complicated to be successful, however.

David Aardsma(notes): Aardsma had hip surgery in January and hasn't pitched for the Seattle Mariners all spring. He was able to play catch for the first time two weeks ago. The most optimistic projections have Aardsma returning by late April.

Tiger Woods records first eagle since last year’s Masters

As Tiger Woods has been saying for the last couple of months, his swing is still a work in progress. With the Masters only two weeks away, Woods is doing all he can this week at Bay Hill to make sure he leaves his final tuneup with some positives before he departs for the first major of the year.

He got just that early in his round on Saturday, as he eagled the par 5 6th hole at Bay Hill to record his first eagle of the week. After ripping a drive to just inside 200 yards, Woods stuck his approach to 12 feet and calmly rolled in the putt.

But the craziest thing about the eagle wasn't that it was his first of the week ... it was also his first on the PGA Tour since last year's Masters. In that span of time, we've witnessed an oil disaster in the Gulf; the Lakers win another championship; and watched as a group of Chilean miners were rescued.

Hard to believe, huh? Hopefully Tiger doesn't go that long between eagles again.

No fight this time from Marquette, Richmond

When the North Carolina-Marquette Sweet 16 game mercifully hit halftime, studio analyst Greg Anthony summed up Marquette's performance perfectly: "You cannot play the game of basketball worse than they played the first half."

The Golden Eagles were down 40-15 and were probably less competitive than the score indicated. But Anthony's quote could have been attributed to the other regional semifinal, which was equally as ugly.

Richmond was pounded 41-22 in the first half by Kansas and didn't hit double digits until there was 6 minutes and 20 seconds remaining in the first half.

Fellow studio analyst Charles Barkley stayed quiet as Anthony chastised Marquette's play so he could comply with Turner/CBS' positivity mandate, which basically tells the analysts not to be too critical of the college athletes. But there was no doubt he was thinking the same thing.

While both Kansas and North Carolina were favored in their respective games, their opponents failed to live up to the expectations that had been set by the first weekend of play and even the first collection of Sweet 16 games Thursday night. With the exception of a few games, most of the underdogs have come out scrappy against their higher-seeded opponent and that's what got Marquette and Richmond to the Sweet 16 in the first place.

"You know, we just got down and it was a big lead and we fought and fought and fought in the second half and tried to cut it down as much as possible, but we dug ourselves a hole," Marquette guard Darius Johnson-Odom said.

But somehow those teams that fought their way into the Sweet 16 forgot to show up in the first half. North Carolina and Kansas to put Marquette and Richmond in such a deep deficit that even when they started to play better in the second half, it was impossible to make up the difference.

Now, credit Marquette and Richmond for not giving up. Both teams could have easily caved and let the game get more out of hand than it already was. But the Golden Eagles and the Spiders showed that fighter's spirit that has gotten them through most of the tournament.

Unfortunately, it was too little, too late. Marquette still lost 81-63, its worst loss since Louisville defeated it in the quarterfinals of the Big East tournament. Richmond's 77-57 loss was the Spiders worst loss since losing by 20 to Temple back on Feb. 17.

It's unfortunate that Kansas and North Carolina actually faced more spirited competition in their first two games and even more unfortunate for fans who had become spoiled by the rousing down-to-the-wire action that has defined this year's NCAA tournament.

"We just let them dictate the tempo tonight and I think that's what it was," Richmond guard Kevin Anderson said. "They came out real aggressive on us, and we let them stay aggressive and never dictated the tempo."

Shuffle Up: Pricing the starting pitcher market

Okay, amigos, let's get this party started. Here's how I'd price every starting pitcher worth owning if I were heading into a brand new mixer tonight.

A few assumptions: we're talking about 5x5 value here, so strikeouts matter. Don't get hung up on the actual prices but rather how the players rank compared to other players; that's the key.  I reserve the right to tweak this list within 12 hours of initial posting; make a good argument and I'll consider it. And this list isn't made with the idea of justifying any previous list, pick or opinion I've floated out there this spring – I literally construct this list from scratch every time I do it. It's a complete re-do every time.

Bring your respectful disagreement in the comments, and bring a strong argument. It's cool if you don't agree – that's why we have a game. But support why you have a difference of opinion, further the conversation. Game on.

You can't go wrong with a Lester pick, but if he were in the National League, he'd probably be my No. 1 pitcher. … Lee sometimes goes a round or so under value, perhaps because he doesn't have that one "wow" pitch when you watch him. His best skill is spotting his fastball, putting it exactly where he wants it. But the walk/strikeout rate jumps off the page at you. … The only thing better than Kershaw's curve is hearing Vin Scully describe it.

Greinke probably would have been in my Top 5-6 arms if not for the ribs injury. How you feel about him today is probably a matter of style. … Hard to go wrong with the front of that Oakland rotation, factoring in the roomy park and all that extra foul territory. … Lilly's quietly been a WHIP master for a few years, and working in the NL West (LA, San Diego, San Francisco) has obvious advantages. You can always skim him away from Colorado if you so desire.

Let the Regression Police keep carping about Cahill – it's to the point that he's so overrated, he's underrated again. I'll bet on the ground-ball rate and the hope that some of his fallback can be offset by the growth of a young, talented pitcher. A similar theme qualifies with Buchholz, though his upside is higher than Cahill's. … Hudson also strikes me as a safe pick, especially if you're not capped by your innings. Ground-ball specialists tend to be underrated by some of the modern metrics, but we know one thing about ground balls – they never fly over the fence.

Stauffer's pedigree and park push him in this tier, along with his handy work last year (both in the bullpen and in the rotation). And Richard was quietly solid in a sneaky 2010 breakthrough. … If you have to own anyone on the Mets staff for the full year, Niese is the play. The upside here is a mid-3s ERA and 175 strikeouts. … Shields is a BB/K tease, but when he makes a mistake in the zone, it gets hammered. Gopheritis is always going to be a problem here.

If hitting batters were a category, Burnett would be a $40 arm. The best thing I can say about him right now is that he's a dead ringer for Nuke LaLoosh. … Arroyo is better for NL-only groups where he gets you a value just by showing up. In a mixer, you want to swing at a higher upside. … It's a shame McDonald is dinged up right now, not to mention stuck with perhaps the NL's worst team. The Dodgers gave up on him too quickly. … Freedom to use the slider more should help Porcello get that strikeout rate moving in the right direction. I doubt he'll ever be an ace, but he's a lot better than we saw in 2010.

If it’s March 25, Marc-Andre Fleury is shutting someone out

The New Jersey Devils visited Pittsburgh on Friday night to take on the Penguins, but they should have saved everyone's precious time and just forfeited the game. It was March 25 and Marc-Andre Fleury(notes) was in goal for the home team -- their shutout loss was predestined.

Sure enough, Fleury backstopped the Pittsburgh Penguins to a 1-0 win in the shootout to continue one of the NHL's quirkiest and impressive streaks: He's never lost a game or given up a goal on March 25 during his pro career.

Four games, four different years, 112 shots faced and not a single goal allowed on March 25.

Did he know about this nearly annual success going into last night's game?

"No, no clue. It just happened I guess," said Fleury in the dressing room. "It's a good sign, I guess. Playoffs coming up, we're still battling for a spot to get on top of the standings. Definitely a good two points."

After being drafted first overall in 2003, Fleury didn't play on March 25 in his first two seasons. In 2010, he didn't play on the 25th, but faced the Washington Capitals on March 24 -- a 4-3 shootout loss. Otherwise, he's ruled the day:

March 25, 2007: Pittsburgh 5, Boston Bruins 0. Fleury made 29 saves as Sidney Crosby(notes) had 2 goals and an assist. Prior to that date, Fleury had give up three or more goals in eight of his last nine games.

March 25, 2008: Pittsburgh 2, New Jersey Devils 0. Fleury made 31 saves, including 16 in the third period to protect a one-goal lead. He nearly lost the shutout on a Sheldon Brookbank(notes) shot in the second period, but the refs waived it off on account of goalie interference by then-Devil and current Penguin Arron Asham(notes).

March 25, 2009: Pittsburgh 2, Calgary Flames 0. Fleury outdueled Miikka Kiprusoff(notes) with a 31-save performance for his only shutout of March 2009.

March 25, 2011: Pittsburgh 1, New Jersey Devils 0 (SO). An odd one, as the Devils managed just one shot on goal in the first period. But Fleury outdid his childhood idol, goalie Marty Brodeur, for the 19th shutout of his career.

Why so dominant on this particular date? Well, Fleury's traditionally owned the month, as he and the Penguins prep for the postseason. He's a stellar 38-9-8 since 2006 in March. Other than that … who knows? Maybe it's his own special way of celebrating Danica Patrick's birthday? Or, perhaps, International Waffle Day?

Now that he's 4-for-4 in wins and shutouts on March 25, will this odd streak be on Fleury's mind if the Penguins play on 3/25/12?

The Penguins goalie knocked on the wooden bench he was sitting on, before saying, "I hope I forget. Because I never thought about it [before] and it went well."

Stick-tap to the Penguins for postgame video and to Pensburgh for bringing the streak to our attention.

10 Twitter Tips for Startups and Challenger Brands

Posted By WebAdvantage.net on Mar 11th, 2011

With over 190 million users tweeting 65 million times a day, Twitter presents emerging brands with a ton of great opportunities for word of mouth marketing, networking, and brand-building.

Here are 10 tips for startups and challenger brands who are just starting out on Twitter:

Claim @YourBrandName ASAP! First things first—make sure you claim your brand name as your Twitter handle, even if you don’t intend to start using Twitter immediately.  It seems simple enough to do, but many new or upcoming brands that put it off too long run the risk of being name-squatted.  Even big, leading brands have fallen prey to Twitter squatters.  Has your desired Twitter handle already been claimed? Spend some time thinking of a good alternative that fits as closely as possible.  Make sure it’s not a total departure from your actual brand name, to avoid confusion and loss of  brand identity.Take full advantage of Twitter’s design and profile settings. Even though Twitter’s built-in design and profile settings are pretty basic, a surprising number of companies don’t take the time to customize or even complete them.  Lesser-known brands who are trying to establish themselves on Twitter should make every effort to brand their profile design by customizing the background image and color settings.  Here are 50 great examples of corporate Twitter branding for ideas.  This is your chance to really get creative with how you want to be perceived.Don’t over-invest in Twitter tools. You don’t have to invest a lot of money in state-of-the-art Twitter tools in order to be successful.  There are tons of great, free or low-cost Twitter tools out there to accomplish practically any Twitter-related task.  Large, well-established brands typically have a different set of goals and challenges for using Twitter versus that of a lesser-known brand who is just starting out, and they often invest in robust social media monitoring and tracking tools, and expensive account management platforms without a real need for doing so.Make your brand stand out. Challenger brands must work hard to distinguish themselves from the pack, which is something that can be hard to do with only 140 characters at a time to work with.   Finding your brand’s unique voice on Twitter will most likely take time, creativity, and a bit of trial and error.  Produce your own original content that promotes your brand while still being engaging and relevant to your followers without being too “salespitchy.”Practice proper care and feeding.  Smaller brands typically have much less time and resources to devote to social media compared to large brands, but it’s important for them to develop good “care and feeding” habits in order to use Twitter effectively.  If your Twitter isn’t updated on at least a semi-regular basis, your followers will most likely begin to drop off.  There are no rules for how often a brand should tweet, but it’s a good idea to set daily or weekly tweet goals to keep the momentum going.  And don’t forget to @reply and follow people back on a regular basis, too.Learn from your competitors. Brands can learn a lot simply by looking at what their competitors are doing on Twitter and learning from their examples (and mistakes).  Study the ways that leading brands are using Twitter, from the conversations they’re having with their followers to the types of content they’re sharing. What successful things are they doing that you can emulate in your own tweets?  What can you do better?Make sure you’ve “got the goods” beyond Twitter, too. Twitter can be an amazing marketing tool for building your brand, but it’s important to remember that it’s just one layer of communication, and there are a lot of other brands out there vying for attention.  Make sure your website, blog, and any other online presence are as polished and pitch-perfect as they can be without misleading information or untrustworthy content.  And of course, your followers will appreciate openness and honesty in your tweets, too.Cultivate a loyal following. Market segmentation is a good starting point to determine where a challenger brand can have the most impact.  On Twitter, brands cultivate a relevant and loyal following by seeking out niche groups of  users (using tools like Twitter Lists and Twibes) and engaging with them in a meaningful way.   It’s easy to get distracted by statistics like follower counts, but don’t worry so much about the numbers; rather, it’s the quality of the people and connections that really count.Be the people’s champion. On Twitter, Brands have a unique opportunity to connect one-on-one with customers and learn what makes them tick.  Twitter is invaluable as a listening tool to understand their interests, motivations and pain points.  Use Twitter as your brand’s soapbox to rally support and excitement, address their issues and concerns, (and occasionally swoop in and save the day!).Spice things up. To keep followers interested and engaged, focus on sharing content that is tweet-worthy in some way: things that are cool, interesting, useful, news-worthy, etc.  Spice up your tweets with tweet-enhancing tools like Twtapps, Twitpic, hashtags and shortened links. Tweet content is your chance to really set yourself apart.

Now get out there and knock ‘em dead!

Music Mogul Slams Allegations Rihanna's Tour Is Struggling To Sell

Rihanna

Music mogul Irving Azoff has hit out at a newspaper article alleging Rihanna is struggling to sell tickets for her upcoming U.S. tour, insisting the figures quoted in the piece are "so wrong".

The report, published in the New York Post on Tuesday, claimed the Umbrella hit-maker had been urged by tour experts to axe a string of dates on her Loud trek, staged by concert promotion firm Live Nation, due to poor sales. It was alleged just 3,700 tickets had been sold for the singer's gig at T.D. Garden in Boston, Massachusetts in July - adding she will need at least 15,000 to break even.

A source told the New York Post's Page Six column, "It has been a big disappointment. The ticket sales in big U.S. cities like Boston are so bad, they will barely cover basics like the lighting and other arena costs. Tour managers are begging local radio stations to do giveaways."

However, Live Nation boss Azoff has blasted the claims and questioned the reliability of the journalist's source, while he also highlighted Rihanna's sold out shows at London's O2 Arena as an indication of her selling power.

In an email to music analyst Bob Lefsetz, Azoff writes, "There are 56 sold out Rihanna dates in Europe including 9 O2's... 64 per cent of tickets for Rihanna's domestic (U.S.) shows have already been sold...

"Rihanna's Boston show is four months out. Projections say that 90 per cent of the seats will be sold by showtime. Yes, those are just projections, take them however you want. But there are other inaccuracies in the Post story. It states that break even is 15,000 when only 13,500 seats are for sale. And it says that 3,700 tickets have been sold when the actual count is 5,800. Begging where the writer got her information, because it's so wrong."

10 Ways Brands Can Target Moms by Fusing Online Advertising and Social Media

Posted By Jaime on Mar 28th, 2011

This article by Hollis Thomases originally appeared in ClickZ on March 8, 2011.

A study recently released by Burst Media looking at “What Mom Likes Online” generated interesting findings. Among them: “Most moms say online ads promoting products geared towards the family and home fall flat” and “Moms found these ads ‘irrelevant or distracting’,” but that “Online ads that offer product coupons, sales promotion codes and/or other incentives resonate better with moms.” Other Burst Media findings highlight moms’ reliance on social media, niche websites, and mobile devices, echoing what was reported at last year’s ad:tech NY conference. So, what’s an advertiser to do? Here’s a great list for starters.

Give Mom what she wants. Since research finds that moms prefer ads with special offers and discounts, why fight the tide? Attract Mom to your site or social media channels with ads offering coupon downloads, rebates, or sample requests. Encourage her to share these offers with her friends and contribute back to the community with product reviews, fun photos, and other comments.Be a resource to moms. Use social media to offer truly helpful and useful branded content like tips, ideas, advice, how-to videos, news, etc. Moms love recipes (attention food product advertisers!), which not only makes for good resource and advertising content, but recipe communities are also great niche sites on which to advertise.

kraft-ppc-ad

Build a community around your brand. A branded community like Pampers’ MommyCast can become the hub within which your mommy audience can congregate, ask questions of each other and/or experts, share information, and participate in informal research. Promote this community through your online and offline advertising.Bring your branded social media efforts alive in your ads. Not only do you want to incorporate social media into your brand, and your brand into your social media, but you can also literally pull some of these efforts into your online advertising. There have been a number of brands like Volvo and Juicy Juice that have pulled their live tweets into display ads.

juicyjuicetwitterad

Deliver a message that’s cause-worthy. According to 2010 Cone Cause Evolution research, 95 percent of American moms believe cause marketing is acceptable, 92 percent want to buy a product that supports a cause, and 93 percent are likely to switch brands because of the brand’s support of a cause. These are some pretty potent stats! For example, Coke’s “Give it Back” campaign promotes recycling with concrete correlations that resonate with moms.

coke-give-it-back-ad

Cater to Mom’s mobile lifestyle. Don’t overlook mobile devices – moms rarely find themselves untethered these days. Mobile makes Mom’s life easier, and advertisers have a huge opportunity to literally put their brand in Mom’s pocket…or at least her pocketbook! Moms like branded apps that are truly useful and help save them time. Toys”R”Us has built a mobile app for iPhone and BlackBerry that sends deal alerts.

toys-r-us-mobile-deals

And Starbucks uses QR codes to let customers pay for coffee via iPhones.

starbucks-qr-code-app

With mobile social networks growing, advertisers can also look for sponsorship opportunities to gain visibility.

Put Mom in the driver’s seat. Instead of funneling ad messages through one social media channel, you have to reach moms on all fronts. Moms like control, they like having a lot of options, and giving them both lets them tap into their creative side. Let moms customize how they communicate with your brand. Make it easy for moms to connect with your brand on their own terms, whether it’s through Twitter, Facebook, e-mail, text alerts, mobile, or directly on your website. Use advertising to promote these options.Keep moms entertained. Multimedia rules Mom’s world. She loves videos, digital games, and mobile apps that engage, assist, entertain, and inform her…plus a bit of “cool factor” doesn’t hurt either. Generate the kind of ad creative that has a better chance of getting Mom’s attention and shared than a sales pitch. For example, Blendtec’s “Will It Blend?” YouTube campaign (just as easily converted into an infomercial) showcased the company’s blender power in a very attention-getting way. The campaign was such a huge hit that within two years, retail blender sales increased by 700 percent!

will-it-blend

Make it personal. The Aberdeen Group found that a move from segmentation-based marketing to one-to-one personalization can improve conversion rates by 22 percent and customer retention rates by 60 percent. Take advantage of this when developing social media and ad campaigns like MomsRising.org did with a campaign to boost its membership. It created a tool that lets users personalize a video using Mom’s name. You could also try personalizing to Mom’s needs and lifestyle, like Swiffer’s “Cleaning Personality” campaign.

swiffer-cleaning-personality-quiz

Make sure Mom knows how to find you. Prominently display your social media accounts (are they visible in your ads and on your website? Where is Ann Taylor’s social media presence on its site, for example?). Have direct calls-to-action encouraging moms to connect with your brand. (Caution: if you are going to do this, you better have worthwhile and active accounts to visit – there’s nothing worse than a brand promoting its social media account and having it be lame when you get there.)

The bottom line: moms are social media power users – they are savvy, shrewd, and not likely to be as easily fooled by advertising gimmicks. Use social media and advertising together well, however, and you’ll be pleased at the extended mileage you can get from your efforts.

Cee Lo Green: 'I Could Have Gone Comfortably Numb A Long Time Ago'

Cee Lo GreenSinger Cee Lo Green is convinced his tough background has helped him in the music industry, as his "skin is a little thicker" because of his difficult past.

The Forget You hit-maker's father died when he was two years old and his mother, Sheila, was paralyzed in a car crash, dying two years after the accident when Green was just 18.

He suffered from depression as a result and has previously admitted he was "just a plain maniac" in his youth, adding: "I was enraged. I was disgruntled, without an outlet. I was aggressive and I was pretty efficient with it - I took pride in that ability."

Green refuses to link the loss of his parents to his bad behavior - but is adamant his love of music helped change his attitude.

He tells Britain's Daily Mirror, "I never knew my father. He could have been violent in his own right. It's not for me to speculate. I've always had the same heart. The same heart that creates music is the one that made me determined to protect myself at all costs."

"Survival is a skill. I'm a soldier, a lover and a fighter. My skin is a little thicker because of where I've come from. I could have gone comfortably numb a long time ago, but I was saved because of my association with music. Music truly did calm a savage beast."
