Parma fans protest lunchtime kick-off with sandwiches

Like many Serie A fans in Italy (including the Vatican), Parma supporters aren't happy the new lunchtime fixtures aimed at accommodating television companies. So they paid for their tickets and showed up at their side's 12:30 match against Roma on Sunday ready to protest. With sandwiches.

From Football Italia:

“Seeing as this is lunchtime, especially for families who we are supposed to bring back to the stadiums, we invite all the fans to come to the Curva Nord with a sandwich,” read a statement by the Boys ultra group.

“Let us all bring a sandwich and eat it when the teams step on to the pitch. We’ll eat to show those who think the only fans are to be fleeced sitting at home on their sofas.”

Uh...right. I'm going to assume that seeing a bunch of ultras eating sandwiches during the match made no one realize the folly of their ways and accomplished nothing. What do these fan groups think they will accomplish with hollow protests like this? How hard is to understand that nothing short of costing club owners and TV companies money will ever get them to change what they do? Sure, they're costing the club a bit of money by bringing sandwiches instead of buying food at the stadium, but that's not enough to get anyone to care.

Instead of eating a sandwich in the Curva Nord, the Boys should have asked fans to not buy tickets and eat their sandwiches outside the stadium during the game. Then, they should have urged fans of other clubs to do the same when the 12:30 fixture comes to their town.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to sit on my couch and eat a sandwich in protest of this lame sandwich protest.
