Video: Oilers goalie Devan Dubnyk’s ‘grand larceny’ glove save

While watching this Devan Dubnyk(notes) save on Olli Jokinen(notes) of the Calgary Flames from Saturday night, keep in mind that the Edmonton Oilers goalie is 6-foot-6 … so this nimble move to snag the puck with his glove was pretty stellar:

There haven't been many "save of the year" candidates recently in the NHL, so this one should be in the mix. If Oilers teammate Magnus Paajarvi(notes) had a vote, Dubnyk would receive it; via CHED's Dan Tencer on Twitter, quoting Paajarvi tonight:

"If that isn't the save of the year, I don't know. He saved me because I was on the ice and would have been minus."

Killer reactions on that play from Dubnyk. This was one of those shots that, in real time, you're thinking is a tap-in for Jokinen. Dubnyk had other designs, apparently.

Video: Alex Ovechkin's tremendous OT goal vs. Islanders

This sort of goal has been far too infrequent for Alex Ovechkin(notes) this season, which is one of the reasons why Sports Illustrated labeled him a "Falling Star" in its latest issue.

But in overtime against the New York Islanders on Tuesday night, the Washington Capitals captain finally added another clip to the highlight reel, going end-to-end and spinning Frans Nielsen(notes) around like a top before scoring on the backhand.

Ovechkin made mention of the booing in Verizon Center during postgame comments, and for 59 minutes the Capitals looked like the same offensively nurtured team they were prior to the trade deadline.

Then Jason Arnott(notes), acquired from the New Jersey Devils on Monday, set up Brooks Laich(notes) in front of the Islanders' goal for the game-tying tally with 48 seconds left in the game. Then Ovechkin decided to get vintage on the Isles for the 2-1 victory, the seventh OT goal of his career. 

Eight short of an Ovechtrick tonight, but it'll do.

Video: Derrick Rose's through-the-legs dime to Joakim Noah

There's an awful lot to like about an awful lot of what Derrick Rose(notes) is doing these days. He's averaging 25 points and eight assists per night, he's hitting 35 percent of his 3-pointers and he's become a dynamite leader for a Chicago Bulls team that's winning 70 percent of its ballgames. Dude's a stone beast.

Likewise, there's an awful lot to like about this first-quarter play, starting with Rose's athletic interception of a bad cross-court pass by the Washington Wizards. The likefest proceeds when Rose turns on the jets and forces John Wall(notes) into a defensive no-man's land, and comes to a satisfying conclusion with a flashy no-look, through-the-legs bounce pass to a streaking Joakim Noah(notes) for a slam on the break. It's always nice to reward your returning big man for running the floor by getting him an easy bucket, even in a 105-77 road laugher that wasn't necessarily short on good looks for anyone wearing red.

And there's not an awful lot you can say for the decision made here by Nick Young(notes), who clearly didn't learn the lesson of that first pick — you should probably not throw lazy passes across the middle of the floor when Derrick Rose is prowling the perimeter:

Poor Wizards fans. What an awful lot they've drawn this year.

Video: Blake Griffin brings the laffs

In a few short months, Blake Griffin(notes) has become the hottest thing going in NBA circles by virtue of his rim-rattling dunks. His presence brings an electricity to arenas around the league, and he's made the Clippers relevant for the first time in years.

However, Griffin has a low profile off the court. Needing a dose of personality for his public image, Griffin partnered with MySpace Comedy for a series of interviews that bring you the man behind the dunks.

These are parody interviews, but they very clearly bring across what Griffin's like away from basketball. He's humble, friendly, and blessed with a pretty darn impressive sense of comedic timing. He's obviously patterned his style after Will Ferrell, but no one ever said influence is the same as stealing someone's style.

Apparently Dwyane Wade(notes) is some amalgamation of a superhero in his latest Nike ad. It's a season-long campaign, that will see Wade (not as "Flash," which is unfortunate because Flash was a super-amazing movie; but as "D3") vanquish all manner of bad guys (from the Lakers, Magic, and Celtics; if we're reading this correctly) in advertisement form.

Actually, that doesn't sound half bad.

Video: Greg Reid wishes Marcus Lattimore a very painful New Year

South Carolina's star freshman, Marcus Lattimore, got off to another fast start Friday night, turning a short pass on the Gamecocks' third snap of the Chick-Fil-A Bowl into a 53-yard gain into Florida State territory. Three plays later, though, Lattimore's night came to an abrupt end, courtesy of diminutive FSU cornerback Greg Reid:

Lattimore suffered a concussion on the hit, according to coach Steve Spurrier, and spent the night in the hospital, getting his mouth surgically stitched. The fumble was his first career turnover, but only the first of five Gamecock giveaways on the night – three on interceptions from the arm of Stephen Garcia, and another on a fumble by All-American receiver Alshon Jeffery. Backups Kenny Miles and Brian Maddox kept Carolina's running game on track with 123 yards on 22 carries between them, but it wasn't enough to negate the turnovers in a 26-17 Florida State win.

Reid, listed at 174 pounds, was punching at least 40 pounds out of his weight class in the collision, and he was only getting started: With four passes broken up, a second forced fumble and a pair of big punt returns that set up FSU field goals, the former five-star recruit delivered the breakout performance of the night, setting himself up for a big, hype-fulfilling junior season in the fall.

The rest of the Seminoles may be right there with him as a team. The bowl victory sealed the 'Noles' first 10-win season since 2003, and will almost certainly leave them in the top 20 in the final polls for the first time since 2004, the first year of ACC expansion. Beyond that, though, the real test for Jimbo Fisher's first season in place of Bobby Bowden was whether a stagnant program had regained some momentum toward its birthright as ACC overlord and perennial national contender under the new administration. They're still on their way, but as far as momentum goes, Friday night was a confident "yes."

'Black Swan' Review: 'Two Jews On Film' Have A Happy Halloween With 'Masterpiece' 'Black Swan' (Video)

'Black Swan' directed by Darren Aronofsky, simply put, is a masterpiece.  Natalie Portman, in the performance of her career. Portman portrays Nina, a beautiful, fragile ballerina with The New York City Ballet.  Like all great artists, Nina is obsessed with perfection.  When she gets the chance to to dance the lead in a new ballet created by the artistic director, the wonderful Vincent Cassel,  this obsession takes her and the audience on a journey into a dark, nightmarish world.  Aronofsky has cast this film perfectly.  Barbara Hershey portrays Nina's controlling, suffocating mother, Mila Kunis is the young ballerina waiting for Nina to fail and Winona Ryder, in a great comeback role, is aging prima ballerina, Beth who Nina has replaced. You don't have to love ballet, to love this film.  All you need to do is sit back and enjoy the ride. 'Black Swan' will certainly be on the top of the list when Oscar season heats up.  Opens in theaters, December 3, 2010.

Video: Kevin Durant's scary stalker is probably just a paid actor

John Schuhmann just pointed this out on Twitter, and I'll admit to being a little confused.

On the surface, it looks as if one of Kevin Durant's(notes) neighbors in Oklahoma City is posting videos of his All-Star neighbor moving in, ordering pizza, and eating breakfast. Kind of creepy, right?

But there's also a production style to these videos -- in the age of attempting to make anything and everything go viral -- that raises my curiosity. It's a little too slick. A little too funny, and there's also a shot of a massive harp on the lip of the moving truck in front of Kevin Durant's house. I really don't think Kevin Durant has a harp.

But there aren't any obvious logos to be seen. Sure, Nike and Gatorade are around, but beyond that?

Ah, forget it. It's probably Nike. Either way, here's a shot of Durant "moving in."

Video: Saints player injures chain gang official during punt return

All week, the NFL focused on the danger of players hitting players. After a frightening incident in New Orleans, the league may be forced to consider the danger of players hitting officials.

During punt return coverage in his team's loss to the Clevelnd Browns, New Orleans Saints special teamer Courtney Roby(notes) plowed into a member of the chain gang while in a full sprint. Al Nastaci, who was standing a few feet from the field while holding a first-down marker, fell hard to the ground after Roby shoved him with both hands. The official appeared to hit his head in the process.

He was immediately attended to by medical personnel and was wheeled out of the Superdome on a stretcher after a 15-minute delay. Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Nastaci was diagnosed with a mild concussion and will remain hospitalized overnight. He is expected to be fine.  

Roby was assessed a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for running out of bounds. It wouldn't be surprising if he and his NFL peers received a memo this week on the proper places to run during kick returns.

Video: Cam Newton 'is a young man fulfilling his athletic potential'

Auburn 24, LSU 17. Auburn fans met Gene Chizik's hiring in 2008 with equal parts incredulity and pitchforks. Maybe five years from now, when his current quarterback is in the NFL and his offensive coordinator is presiding over his own team, then their initial instincts will be proven right. At the moment, though, Chizik is the coach of the year, for the sole reason that he convinced Cameron Newton and Gus Malzahn to join his team.

And even Malzahn, the celebrated spread passing guru, has never looked smarter than he has does this year, for scrapping his freewheeling system in favor of the most primitive, run-oriented attack in the SEC. He recognized early what he has in his new quarterback, who is a genuine freak of nature. I don't use the term lightly – in fact, I've never used the term "freak" to describe a player in print, precisely because I was saving it for the day someone did what Cam Newton did today against one of the most blue-chip laden defenses in the country. If the description is ever going to fit, it's here: Newton is 6-foot-5, 250 pounds and runs like he was sired by a classic Mustang. He's not the Alpha and Omega, but he is a freak.

For almost any athlete in that category, the visceral absurdity of their existence is a better gauge than statistics. Auburn slugged out 441 yards rushing – its fourth straight 300-yard effort against SEC defenses – on a unit that came in ranked third nationally in total defense and sixth against the run. Newton had 216 of that number, on 29 carries.True freshman Michael Dyer also cracked 100 yards, and sophomore Onterrio McCalebb broke a 70-yard touchdown run. But it was the sheer velocity of Newton's winding sprint to the end zone in the third quarter that instantly defined the Tigers' run to 8-0: This guy was already the best quarterback in the country over the first half of the season; if he can do that against a defense like LSU's, the sky is the limit for him and whatever team he happens to be playing for.

The title to this post is Verne Lundquist's perfectly understated call of the year to accentuate the run of the year. It comes off as a kind of laugh line – "Ha ha, you can say that again, Verne." But in Newton's case, the oversvation was terrifyingly accurate, and considering the murky path that brought him to Auburn, surprisingly poignant. Newton's potential was always off the charts, but even before his dismissal from Florida, it was never certain he would seize the brief opportunity to fulfill it. Many, many talented phenoms never do. Newton is, and everyone associated with Auburn should be enjoying the ride while it lasts.
